The best pg-13 movie ever!!! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

This movie and The Others are the only other PG-13 horror movies that is worth watching. I loved this movie due to its originality and its suspense. This movie kept me guessing the the end and i enjoyed it very much. I highly recommend this movie to every horror fan!!!

Great acting pulls beneath up from silliness. - What Lies Beneath Reviews

"What Lies Beneath" works because of the strong direction and the performances. The story revolves around Claire(a terrific Michele Pfeiffer.)who begans hearing things and noticing strange things happening around her, unfortunately she gets a long, silly subplot involving her next door neighbours, once aside the movie does kick into high gear with Harrison Ford not playing his usual hero characters. His role is small and not really showy, but this showcases the beautiful and talented Pfeiffer. With the usual Hitchcock gags and the standard scare tactics, I really like this movie. I must say I think it's one really good ghost story to come out since "The Others."

Harrison Ford does a very good job in this movie. The plot is very scary and very twisted. If you like scary movies see The Sixth Sence and this one.

What a good film! ! ! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

I think this is a really good movie the first time i watched it it scared me but the second time it wasnt that great. I dont think the film was the best thriller eva or even one of the best but i really love this film. I think the story of this is great too and its not a film i will for get quikly. If people got really really scared from this they shouldnt watch scary films. I also think that the idea of the film was great and even if u have seen it loads of times its still a really good movie and its something you would watch in a group with your mates for a good night. The actors were great too i think the cast was a really good cast and the director did really well. I just want to say to people too that if you dont like this movie you should keep watching it because you may not understand the plot of the story line.I hope everyone watches it at least once more time and i hope you all enjoy it.

(can't think of anything catchy) - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Terrific thriller. The scariness of this movie lessens after you watch it ten thousand times but it is still really good as a movie. It is directed with style and vision, very elegantly. Michelle Pfeiffer is terrific in this movie. This movie will make you jump, laugh, and it can be pretty creepy if you're alone in the dark. I think this is a classic movie and the second best of 2000 (the first being "The Emperor's New Groove"). This is just some of the amazing things Hitchcock would've done with special effects. Except this movie isn't as boring as his are. People say this movie is slow but I think it's entertaining. Long, yes, but very good and exciting. His movies are slow and stupid and pointless. And you'll see homages to "Rear Window" and be reminded of "Vertigo" and "Rebecca" and what not. Forget cinema history and lose yourself in this great movie.

What lies beneath - What Lies Beneath Reviews

What lies beneath is a great movie with good acting, good story, and good scares. I was freaked out by parts of this film.

Good movie - What Lies Beneath Reviews

This movie really kept me guessing. I really enjoyed it and was really happy to see Harrison Ford moved out of his stereotypical roles. The visual effects and the camera angles were really great!

Good performance - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Oh s***. haha. I've not seen any thrillers for ages. Then today I was, honestly, chilled by this movie. The fact is that It was not that horrible. But,the performance is very breath-taking. Especially, the actress,(liked her,she is so brilliant). For the storyline,I knew it must be something wrong with the husband, however,I didn't really have a clear clue that's gonna happen,so it is suspensive for me. Enjoyed it. ps:Just remind you. Whenever u watch thriller,do watch it alone. (grin)

A thriller that really thrills!!!! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

A great movie. Truly scary! The setting really sets the mood for the whoe movie. The plot and the actions seems to melt together into this big pit of fright. A great movie, I only wish I had seen it in the theater. A great movie that will last throught the times!

Awesome - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Great thriller!!! Don't watch this alone. It's got everything you could want in a Thriller. Great acting. Nice to see Harrison in a different type of movie. Michelle and Harrison have great chemistry which adds to this good movie. Enjoy!

Predictable, not scary, worthless. - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Who funds this garbage? I really want to know? Who thought that this would be a good movie to see? Who would ever think that this movie is scary? I hated this movie. Totally predictable, not scary, and a bore.

What lies beneath - What Lies Beneath Reviews

this movie started off okay and i was gettin into it then it just started getting way to weird for my liking.

What does lie beneath? - What Lies Beneath Reviews

The answer is an at times effective thriller that just bored me a little to much. The way this movie was advertised was more in the horror genre then thriller or mystery and that just isn't the case. I've heard so many people say this movie is scary. Well to me making you jump using the boo tactic a few times isn't "scary". Anyone can do that. More then that this movie is suspenseful at times. There's a few of those moments when the anticipation of what's there is very creepy. The only problem is...the suspense never built to anything. So many people don't care because for the moment their heart was beating fast. Am I the only one who looks back and says..that was cool but what was the point? Where was it going, because where this movie ended up going to me wasn't worthy of the decent build up. I must say that I never saw the major plot twist coming, that's not to say it was a good twist, they just did a good job at surprising me.

Fair horror movie - What Lies Beneath Reviews

the good thing in this movie that make it fair horror movie is the acting that make you believe the fear in Michile eyes also the story line wasn't bad.

Not as great as expected. - What Lies Beneath Reviews

I really loved the Others which I thought this would be a little bit like. It started off very well then took a fall. I went from a supernatural thriller into a action thriller with some ghost stuff thrown in. I wish the last about 25 minutes was completely changed. It takes you to two differently stories then. It at least was a spooky movie.

Accetable 'haunted house' movie - What Lies Beneath Reviews

To me, the standard for modern haunted house movies has been set by "The Others" (2001) with Nicole Kidman. "What Lies Beneath" was made just before that, and although it is not as creepy, it was an honest effort nonetheless. A few good scares here and there along with a decent storyline that unfortunately ends up a bit over the top... Don't look for any other acting performances besides Ford and Pfeiffer, they're alone all the way. Pfeiffer was pretty good.

What? - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Stupid. What were they thinking. A girl gets haunted by a ghost or zombie. Both Micheal Phifer and Harrison Ford give dreadful parts. Phifer did not have me beliveing that she was scared of the ghost or zombie. I have not givin a movie under a A. I gave this movie a F. DON'T SEE THIS MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

This is one of the best horror/suspense movies I have EVER seen. It just as thrilling as a rollercoaster ride, I loved it. Girls, beware, it will have you jumping and clinging onto your boyfriend the whole time. Guys, this is definately the movie to watch if you want your girl to cling to you! :)

Jumpy thriller with great acting skills - What Lies Beneath Reviews

SO SCARY! On the negative side: Parts are predictable and Michelle Pfeiffer (spelling?) screams too much. On the positive side: Harrison Ford as the bad guy! I really didn't see it coming thanks to his great acting and I kept thinking "I'm almost at the end" when a new twist in the story came about. The plotline was complex yet believable and, for those of you who haven't seen this movie, heed the title: What LIES Beneath. Figure out for yourself what's true and what's not as you go along and I'm certain you'll enjoy the outcome. Scary special effects only add to the suspense and the way the ghosts come and go is a real cinematic treat. Enjoy and be frightened.

Good - What Lies Beneath Reviews

What lies beneath can mean many things, especially for this movie. Ive thought about that title and which one was intended for the movie 1) what lies beneath the lake 2) what lies BENEATH (escape) Claire Spencer 3) what lies beneath norman spencer (keeping the secret) So anyway yeh it was a good movie, scary at times and worth yer time.

A well-made ghost story - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Overall, I thought this was an excellent ghost story, with some very clever plot innovations and a story that is exciting without being contrived. The tension is gradually built up from the start with events at the beginning which could be dismissed as mere co-incidence, but which still leave the viewer asking 'but what if...' The 'jumpy' aspect of the film adds to the thrill of watching it. Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer are perfect for this film, and play their parts well. The parts when we actually see the ghost are genuinely frightening, and stay with you long after the film has ended. The twist ending is totally unexpected, and is a perfect climax to a carefully crafted film.

The best thriller i have ever seen - What Lies Beneath Reviews

This movie freaked me out so much that I was afraid to go outside. It is very suspenceful. Maybe this is just because my friend jumped at me during the scary parts I don't know. I would recomend it though.

What lies beneath - What Lies Beneath Reviews

What Lies Beneath is a top class thriller. Everytime you see it, you will find it even more creepy and scary! I gave it a B+ because I wasn't sure really how good it was since it is the only scary movie I have really seen. If you like scary movies or not, you will find this one of the scariest movies ever. There are only two flaws in this movie, but I don't want to give away anything to ruin the film. I hope you will consider renting this movie, but remember the five steps in watching What Lies Beneath... 1. Don't watch it by yourself! 2. Don't sleep by yourself that night! 3. Watch it during the day! 4. Pause it if necassary! 5. Watch something happy afterwards!

Freakin scary! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

What Lies Beneath TERRIFIED ME! GOD I hadn't been so frightened since I saw the Sixth Sense! What a TERRIFYING movie! I didn't like Michelle Phfieffer until I saw What Lies Beneath, but now I realize she has a talent for acting!

"what lies......they say!!" - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Director of the Back to the Future trilogy mixes a talented cast with a mysterious mellow spook-story that turns out quite better than most gory horror films people proudly watch, but this one reaches some levels of The Sixth Sense. This polished title deserves a trophy it absolutley shines....Ford and Phieffer deliver a convincing performance we can all enjoy. The movie is a thriller and only a thiller, not meant for panic attacks. The story is very good, the home is ironicly cozy, and overall the truth that LIES beneath is Greatness' beyond other thrillers ahead of its time. It remains one of my favorites for some reason, and yet captures my imagination........

The best horror movie i've seen in years. - What Lies Beneath Reviews

This was finally one of the better horror movies that I have seen since Sixth Sense. It was nice for a change to have the spirits get revenge on a real jerk. The acting of Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeifer were very realistic. I enjoyed the tremendously.

Michelle pfeiffer is outstanding - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Once again, in a year of blockbusters and over-the-top acting, we get a more toned down horror film that relies on it's actors to tell a story. In this case, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, argubaley the two most popular screen actors of their day. Ford has the "Indiana Jones" and "Fugitive" movies to make his case, while Pfeiffer has "Batman Returns", "The Fabulous Baker Boys" and "The Age of Innocence" to prove she is a top player. Both play characters of total realistic solitude. A recently married couple who send her daughter off to college and settle down in their summer home. But Pfeiffer starts discovering clues that her husband may actually be a murderer. What loses "What Lies Beneath" points is the shamless director (Robert Zemickis) gives his ending away during the trailer. Bad mistake, since we want to find that out on our own time. NOMINATIONS (3): ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE Michelle Pfeiffer, SOUND, ORIGINAL SCORE.

Best effects, best plot! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

What Lies Beneath is a chilling thriller which will leave you on the edge of your seat! Michelle Pheiffer and Harrison Ford deliver a very incredible performance in this one. With its scary jolts and suspensful moments, What Lies Beneath is defintely a great movie for horror movie fans.

The scariest thriller since the sixth sense - What Lies Beneath Reviews

Before What Lies Beneath, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer had never really been in a thriller film, and I don't think they were ever in a film together. But then, Robert Zemeckis tried his hand at a thriller film, and he put Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer in it. Norman and Claire Spencer think that they're happy living by a lake in their new home in Vermont, and their daughter has just gone to college. But then Claire gets suspicious about her strange neighbor, who may have murdered his wife. But there's more problems. The doors open and close, the radio turns on by itself, and a picture of Norman at one of his achievement ceremonies keeps falling down. Norman sends Claire to a phyciatrist(Joe Morton) who tells her to try contacting whatever is possesing the house. But then one night while Claire is alone she shouts, "Who are you?!" And then, written on the steam-stained mirror is: YOU KNOW. Is Claire imagining things? Is there really a ghost? Could the ghost be the wife of her neighbor? Or is it someone else? You'll have to find out for yourself. What Lies Beneath was directed by Academy-Award winning director Robert Zemeckis. Zemeckis won his award for the classic film Forrest Gump, but he also directed Contact, Romancing the Stone, Back to the Future, Death Becomes Her, and even Who Framed Roger Rabbit. His most recent film was Cast Away. In November will be released his latest film, The Polar Express. But no matter how many great movies he makes, What Lies Beneath will always be one of his best. It's the scariest thriller since The Sixth Sense!

Beneath a great movie - What Lies Beneath Reviews

I love this movie. I have watched it over and over in a few years span, without finding it boring. It is just the right mix of well written story, good acting, and good direction. The cinematography is about the best I have seen. The story does not just go for cheap sick thrills, like so many of these slice'n dice movies, but really draws you into it with new clues and symbols revealed slowly through the movie. Michelle and Harrison do a really good job making their characters real to you. Michelle keeps you right there with her as she makes new discoveries pushing you into the spirit world. Harrison also does his job in keeping the sense of the real world of common sense alive, and holding the secrets in from being revealed to early. The misty, dim lighting used in much of the movie brings that eerie ghost story feel to it, yet the use of vibrant color is used when it needs to be. The louder than natural sounds effects and musical score can be considered a character by themselves. What I really enjoy about a movie like this is that it joins the mystery genre together with a supernatural thriller. The thrills are more from suspense and suprise that gore and shock. That makes for a more cerebral experience. If you like What Lies Beneath I would also recommend, Gothika. While Gothika contains more gore and perversion, it holds the same kind of mystery/thriller fascination as does Lies Beneath.

Pop up scary! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

This movie is one of the scariest movies i've seen in a long time. It will literally make u jump out your seat. Though the story is kinda long and boring at times its still pretty good.

Very intense! - What Lies Beneath Reviews

If you are hungry for an intense, jump-out-of-your-seat movie, than this is the one for you. The only think better than watching this movie for the first time is watching other people watch it for the first time. It isn't technically the best horror film, but it is the best film for thrills. What Lies Beneath more than makes up for a slightly lacking storyline with more than enough scares. Michelle Pfeiffer is very convincing when she acts scared, believe me. The movie is also visually successful. The house Claire (Pfeiffer) lives in is very beautiful and inviting during the day--but during the night, shadows are made longer and spookier and that same house seems very haunting. Overall, however, this movie is made great by the thrills it delivers more so than its technical aspects. I recommend this movie to anyone who has a lot of friends coming over who haven't seen it yet, or anyone who is sitting alone in their house at night. (parents beware: this film will probably be keeping you awake after the movie goes off with the smaller children)

Scary, scarier, scariest - What Lies Beneath Reviews

This is definitely one of the scariest films of all time. I literally jumped out of my chair while watching this in my own living room with 5 or 6 other people. Harrison Ford is, as usual, very believable as Dr. Spencer. Pfeiffer is equally believable as the fear-stricken Mrs. Spencer. What makes this film so scary is, I think, the reality and humanity within the story. The terrifying scenes are built much like a Hitchcock film with the audience knowing full-well of an impending shock several minutes in advance so as to savor the fright effect. A great and memorable film.

Scary - What Lies Beneath Reviews

I saw this movie not knowing one thing about it and I was highly entertained. The suspense is nonstop and the movie has a great cast. Harrison Ford is one of my favoriite actors. Michelle Pffiefer has the capabilities of a good actress, but many of her movies were not that great. I changed my mind after I saw this movie, she was great. I liked her in this just as much as I liked her in Scarface. The movie has a great story and a hot and scary ghost. My two favorite parts are when Claire is spying on her strange neighbors and then he just appears in the window out of nowhere, freaky. The ending was great, it was probably the most highly suspensful ending I have seen in a ghost movie. Great choice for the villian. I like the movie because it is almost impossible to figure out who the real killer was until the stunning seen with the 411 redial. The movie actually has about three different suspensful stories that all come down to one great ending. The scariest part in the movie I think is in the truck, for those whove seen it, you know what i am talking about, but I wont spoil the scariest part of the movie for those who havent seen it yet. Watch this movie, it is very scary, I showed it to my friend and she was afraid to get into the bathtub for a week! If you rent it, be sure to watch it at night by yourself, it is much scarier.

Not much lies beneath, but uncovering it is fun. - What Lies Beneath Reviews

What Lies Beneath is an effective entry into the horror genre (though it's basis lies more in the roots of Hitchcock and suspense/thrillers in general), which has been collapsing under the strain of terrible teen-based films. This time, we have Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, two fine middle-aged performers who are both in top form here. So is Robert Zemeckis, whose 3 year hiatus has grown a build-up for his fans-including me-out there expecting some quality cinema, and while this film isn't the classic his previous 2 were (Forrest Gump and Contact), it's far better than what a lot of critics have given it credit for. Norman and Claire Spencer (Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, respectively) are a happily married New England couple whose grown-up daughter just left home for college. Claire is getting adjusted to that fact, at the same time trying to get adjusted to the new house they've just moved into. To get her mind off her troubles, Claire decides to meet their neighbors, another married couple, James and Mary Feur. But Claire begins to suspect there's something wrong in the Feur household. First, she notices Mary sobbing uncontrollably and trying to hide from her husband when he returns home from work. Then, one night she sees the husband put in a giant bag into the car, large enough to fit a person. Her observations for the next few days lead her to believe that the husband has killed his wife, and her beliefs are only heightened when she believes there's ghost inside her house trying to tell her something. I'm trying to be a little vague about the film, simply because it's a lot better not to know the plot twists and turns. The trailers gave too much away, and thus led me to correctly predict the film's big plot twist even before I actually went to see the movie. But that isn't the movie's flaw, and I'm sure that the twist would be surprising for the uninitiated. This is Robert Zemeckis' first foray in this genre, and he does a superb job. Even though the jump scenes-of which there are a huge amount of-may seem a little obvious, it's only Zemeckis paying homage to films of the past. And when they're as well-executed as it was in this film, those scenes can be very effective (lots of people actually screaming in the theater). Zemeckis also creates one magnificent set piece involving a bathtub (you'll know when you see it). This is the sort of sequence that reminds me of Brian De Palma, in which camerawork, the acting, and the situation itself-little to no special effects-are all that's used to create suspense. I've noticed a lot of complaints about the finale, which some found interfered with the tone and pacing of the previous 110 minutes. The film was derided for switching from a ghost story to something similar in Fatal Attractions. There is some truth in that, but the finale is also thrilling and suspenseful, thus lessening any sort of true negative impact it might have had if the scenes were less competently executed. The only two performers who are given a substantial amount of screen time are Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, and both are terrific. Ford as the loving husband is always convincing and Pfeiffer as the woman who thinks she could either be going out of her mind or actually witnessing a supernatural phenomena is equally good. The film is really hers, though, since she's the one that does the investigation while the others have doubts about what she's saying. The supporting performances are from Joe Morton as a pyschiatrist and Diana Scarlid as Claire's best friend are decent, though neither are given a lot of screen time. James Remar as the husband who may or may not have killed his wife is chilling in the scenes he does appear in. The amount of critical bashing What Lies Beneath received leads me to believe that some people view this movie with too much of a harsh eye and need to believe that every film of this sort absolutely has to be unpredictable. To some respect, I can agree with the critics who say the first 2/5 of the movie is perfunctory, but only to a certain point. This is a far too enjoyable thriller for me to criticize substantially. Clark Gregg's script doesn't have an ounce of originality in it. The storyline is quite reminiscent of last year's Stir of Echoes. But originality really doesn't matter that much in comparison to how well it's executed. And in the case of What Lies Beneath, you have a very well-crafted thriller that was easily one of the best films of summer 2000 in a season of weak entries.
