Beneath a great movie - What Lies Beneath Reviews
I love this movie. I have watched it over and over in a few years span, without finding it boring. It is just the right mix of well written story, good acting, and good direction. The cinematography is about the best I have seen.
The story does not just go for cheap sick thrills, like so many of these slice'n dice movies, but really draws you into it with new clues and symbols revealed slowly through the movie.
Michelle and Harrison do a really good job making their characters real to you. Michelle keeps you right there with her as she makes new discoveries pushing you into the spirit world. Harrison also does his job in keeping the sense of the real world of common sense alive, and holding the secrets in from being revealed to early.
The misty, dim lighting used in much of the movie brings that eerie ghost story feel to it, yet the use of vibrant color is used when it needs to be. The louder than natural sounds effects and musical score can be considered a character by themselves.
What I really enjoy about a movie like this is that it joins the mystery genre together with a supernatural thriller. The thrills are more from suspense and suprise that gore and shock. That makes for a more cerebral experience.
If you like What Lies Beneath I would also recommend, Gothika. While Gothika contains more gore and perversion, it holds the same kind of mystery/thriller fascination as does Lies Beneath.
